The TIMARETE Festival is a vibrant celebration of Hellenic heritage and artistic expression that brings together communities from around the globe. With a rich program of cultural events taking place both in Greece and abroad, the festival invites audiences to immerse themselves in the timeless beauty and contemporary influence of Greek culture. From captivating art exhibitions and thought-provoking film screenings to theatrical performances, live music, and traditional and modern dance, the festival offers something for everyone.
Each year, Greek and international artists—whose work draws inspiration from the spirit, history, and mythology of Hellenism—come together to share their creative visions. The result is a dynamic, multicultural mosaic that honors the legacy of the past while celebrating its influence on the present and future.
Organized by the Academy of Hellenic Paideia Inc, a dedicated not-for-profit organization, the festival is funded entirely by generous donations and sponsorships. This community-supported model ensures that the events remain accessible, inclusive, and diverse.
The TIMARETE Festival welcomes all—Greeks and non-Greeks alike, of every age and background—who share an interest in culture, art, and meaningful connection. Whether you have deep roots in the Hellenic world or you're simply curious to explore its treasures, this festival offers a warm invitation to celebrate, learn, and be inspired.
Join us in honoring the beauty of Hellenic culture as it continues to inspire creativity and unity across borders!

Who Was Timarete?
Timarete was an ancient Greek female painter from the 5th century BCE, one of the earliest recorded women artists in Western history. She was the daughter of Micon, a well-known painter of the time, and chose to follow in his footsteps—defying the societal expectations of women in classical Athens.
Timarete is most famously known for a painting of the goddess Artemis, which she dedicated to the temple at Ephesus. While none of her actual works survive, her name lives on as a symbol of artistic courage, cultural devotion, and female empowerment in a male-dominated world.
Why We Named the Festival “Timarete”
We chose the name TIMARETE Festival to honor the legacy of this pioneering woman artist—a name that reflects the values at the heart of our mission:
Artistic excellence
Cultural preservation and innovation
Empowerment through education and expression
Inclusivity across gender, background, and geography
Just as Timarete dared to express her vision through art in ancient Greece, our festival encourages artists from all walks of life to share their interpretations of Hellenic culture with the world. Her story reminds us that art transcends time, borders, and limitations, making her a fitting muse for a festival that celebrates the enduring influence of Hellenism through creativity.
The TIMARETE Festival is more than a series of events—it’s a tribute to those who dare to create, to preserve, and to inspire.
ABOUT THE ACADEMY OF HELLENIC PAIDEIA
The Academy of Hellenic Paideia is a not-for-profit educational organization based in Astoria, NY. It provides children with an interactive education by integrating Hellenic language with music, dance, theater, art, and the ancient Greek martial art of Pankration. It is our mission to encourage learning by the use of the classical Hellenic tradition of Paideia via the venerable Greek language. By guiding each child's mind by what amuses them, we may better discover and nourish their unique genius in an effort to promote their fullest human potential; mind, body, and spirit.
